Performance + Installation Hybrids

Live performance / installation projects using my music notation generating software, mNotation™
and multiple performers following instruction tracks via mobile device

mNotation™ Software Overview • mNotation™ is my online algorithmic music notation generating project, and is central to the idea of a concert performance/art installation hybrid which I call a distributed system. Performers (any instrument or vocal range) are distributed around a performance or gallery space, and perform musical notation as it appears in real time on their laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Tempi are coordinated (or not!) with a built-in metronome.

Integrating Media Tracks in Distributed Systems • mNotation™ integrates well with numerous works I've created for ensmbles (usually vocal) performing instructions they hear over their headphones, played on their smartphones or other .mp3 player. These instructions can include matching pitch and tempo tracks, chanting texts from many languages, and executing theatrical events or dance gestures.

Current Scores and Configurations • I've been working on these Distributed System works since about 1983, when my performers followed tempo tracks recorded to cassette tapes played on the Sony Walkman (talk about nostalgia!). Music of incredible complexity (multiple tempi, all gradually changing) or really difficult to achieve with professional ensembles (such as tight vocal clusters, glissandi to and from complex harmonies, microtonal singing) can bloom in front of one's ears on the first rehearsal!

Motion-Responsive Audio/Visual Instruments

Interactive projects for live performance, enhanced by electronic sound and visual imagery generated by movement.

Motion-Responsive Visuals for Dance. Using classic video-synthesis brought into the digital domain and mixed with live video manipulation (videojamming, datamoshing, scratch-cinema, etc.) dancers can augment their choreography and amplify their gestures. Mixes well with live or recorded musical performance.

Motion-Responsive Electronic Musical Performance. Digital software of my own design generates a broad palette of expressive electronic music. The instrument is called the Kombo™, and it produces four theremin 'voices' and plays digital samples, all based on the performer's motion, as captured and transmitted by the Kinect motion sensor.

Musical Performance with Film/Video and Interactive Media

Projects for musical ensembles of various sizes, with visual media on screens, or using projections, or experienced within a virtual environment

  • It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up. Melancholalaland™ brings together singers and dancers in a live mix with video, animation, and original electronic music.

  • The film intermezzo Casual (Sex) Friday™ is the centerpiece of the the transmedia opera Melancholalaland™. It tells the story of Carol Burkell, an employee of the disfunctional future global corporation Masturmatico, Inc., the leading manufacturer of self-pleasuring technologies. She locks herself in a supply closet after a horrible office shooting. Tormented by memories and inner voices, she desperately tries to piece together the events of the shooting and the identity of the killer.
